Libyan rebels were chasing a convoy of trucks believed to include the fugitive leader Muammar Gaddafi, the security advisor to the opposition Transitional National Council Abdul Karim Basama said in remarks published on Friday.

The rebels are hoping to close in on Gaddafi 40 to 50 kilometres south of Tripoli where they believe he might be cornered soon, Basama told The Times of Malta newspaper, reporting from the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.

“He cannot move to the mountain, we are squeezing the only gateways he has left,” said Basama.

“He (Gaddafi) is being cornered. I don't think he can reach Sirte or Sabha anymore. He is manoeuvring in one area south of Tripoli and could be captured or killed anytime. ... It's a matter of a few days,” he said.

Gaddafi has so far evaded capture, along with most of his family, five days after rebels marched into Tripoli.

Basama insisted it would be better for Gaddafi's supporters in his hometown Sirte to surrender before the dictator's capture.

“I hope these tribes will take the right decision,” said Basama.

“From a moral point of view, it will be better for them because if he is caught or killed, it will be a big defeat for them.”

The opposition council has offered a 1.7-million-dollar bounty for Gaddafi's capture. The council promised to pardon anyone who killed him. - Sapa-dpa
