Community caf closer to completion following council grant

A COMMUNITY project to help young people with disabilities has been given a cash boost by the council.

Notts County Council is set to give 4,000 to the scheme which will run a community caf at the Hub, in Newdigate Street, Kimberley.

The money is being donated to the Rumbletums project as part of a partnership fund in Broxtowe.

The project was set up by two parents whose children attend Foxwood Foundation School and Technology College in Bramcote.

The school caters for children aged from three to 19 who have moderate to severe learning difficulties and, in some cases, additional physical disabilities.

Shirley Mowberry, one of the parents, said she was delighted: "The money will help us get off the ground and get things started.

Mrs Mowberry, from Nuthall, said a lack of suitable job prospects for young people with disabilities prompted them to launch the project.

"Once these young people have left school, there's concern about what they'll do.

"We thought it would be a good idea for young people to come and have work which was more suited to their level."

Local councillors and Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry have already given their support to the project.

Richard Robinson, councillor for Kimberley and Cossall, said it was a "fantastic idea".

He added: "It will bring a huge benefit to Kimberley.

"The caf will provide a much-needed service and I'm sure people will welcome it."

Rumbletums has registered as a company and is currently applying for charity status.

It plans to run the caf with paid staff and is currently in the process of applying for more grants and funding.

The Hub building is currently undergoing renovation work and it is hoped the caf will be open by early summer.
