Honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani has been discharged from hospital - but his friends insist he will not be fit to attend his extradition hearing at Woolwich Crown Court in London on May 3.

Dewani, accused of ordering the murder of his wife two weeks after his marriage while in South Africa last November, claims to be suffering from clinical depression and a stress disorder.

He is also reported to have lost 12.7kg.

When he was admitted to Bristol Royal Infirmary on Sunday some reports suggested a failed suicide attempt, but his family insist he simply had a “reaction to his medication”.

Max Clifford, the celebrity publicist paid to give Dewani’s side of the story, said: “He was released yesterday. He is out and he’s at home.

“I know he is feeling better and he’s out of hospital.”

Clifford insisted Dewani had not taken an overdose, adding: “Members of Shrien’s family became extremely worried about his health.

“He is not sleeping or eating and became too weak. The decision to take him to hospital was made by his family in consultation with his doctor.”

Clifford said reports that Dewani had been out eating in restaurants with friends were “100 percent untrue”.

“He wants to get to court for the truth to come out. We are concerned that if he does go back (to South Africa) he doesn’t get tortured, based on what South African lawyers say.

“Shrien suffers from severe traumatic stress disorder. Obviously, statements made by the chief of police (national police commissioner Bheki Cele) and the chief prosecutor (Menzi Simelane) are not helping.

“The most powerful policeman is calling him a murdering monkey and the leading prosecutor is saying he is a fugitive fleeing from the country.

“What chances does he have? It is frightening.

“If it happened in this country (the UK), both these people would be sacked on the spot.”

Dewani, a care home tycoon who declared a multimillion-pound loss on his business last year, was found in “a deep sleep” by his sister on Sunday.

He will have a round-the-clock nurse as he fights post-traumatic stress while on £250 000 (R2.8 million) bail at his £1.3m home in the village of Westbury-on-Trym.

Dewani, 31, has denied any involvement in the death of his Swedish-born wife, Anni Hindocha, 28, on November 13.

But South African officials want him put on trial here after Zola Tongo, the driver who - like Dewani - escaped unhurt from their hijacking in Gugulethu near Cape Town claimed he had been paid by Dewani to set up the “hit”.

Tongo took a plea bargain but was still jailed for 18 years last December.

Dewani failed to attend his first extradition hearing in February, claiming illness, with “friends” and Clifford saying he was “a zombie” and “heartbroken” by the death of his wife.

Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Xolile Mngeni will go on trial in the Wynberg Regional Court in Cape Town on February 25.

They are accused of murder, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances. - Pretoria News
