London – Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina has hinted he could quit Liverpool unless the Premier League club signs several top-class players next season, according to a report Sunday.

Reina, who joined from Villarreal in 2005, is unhappy that the Reds are no longer competing for trophies in England and have also lost their place in the Champions League.

The Reds are 21 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United ahead of Sunday's match against Sunderland and sold star striker Fernando Torres to Chelsea in January.

Torres's exit followed those of Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso and, although Liverpool have improved slightly under new boss Kenny Dalglish, they still crashed out of the Europa League against Portuguese minnows Braga this week.

Reina wants to play for a competitive team who can win the Premier League title as the 28-year-old knows he is approaching the peak of his career.

“We have to strengthen,” Reina told the Daily Star. “If we want to improve then we have to do that.

“It is our duty to be strong, to get better. The only thing I can do is train and do my best. Who knows if I have got years left?

“It's not about being patient. It's about the club winning and I want to be competitive.

“We used to fight to be among the top team and be in the Champions League. Sadly that's not the case now. I want to win titles.” – Sapa-AFP
