Builder stakes an interest in cinema plan

PLANS for a multi-million pound entertainment complex have taken a step forward.

A private sector developer has staked an interest in building a cinema and bowling alley on Leek's High Street car park.

The proposals include multi-lane bowling and cinema screens, including one large screen with a stage and changing rooms for live performances.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council's cabinet is expected to give the go-ahead at a meeting today for a deal to be drawn up with the preferred bidder.

He is expected to be named as property developer Malcolm Barrett, who built a CineBowl in Uttoxeter.

But concerns have been raised it will lead to the loss of the car park or a hike in parking charges.

Opposition councillors also fear it will jeopardise a 7.4 million project to redevelop Leek's Foxlowe building.

Councillor Linda Malyon said she was concerned the builder would want the 98-space car park for the use of customers.

She said: "That is going to be a whole car park lost to the town. I can not understand why the council does not work with the people who want to invest in the Foxlowe."

Council leader Sybil Ralphs said working with private sector developers was the way to go in a time of recession.

She added: "We have a shopping list for a cinema, bowling alley, community facilities and a theatre, which is long overdue."

Executive director Dai Larner states in a cabinet report: "The receipt of a formal expression of interest is an important first step in testing the feasibility of a private-sector-led leisure facility."
