Mental health patient died a week after complaining of pains

A 32-YEAR-OLD mental health patient who was suffering high levels of fat in his blood died of natural causes, an inquest heard.

An inquest into the death of Michael Basham, of Cornwallis Street, Stoke, heard medication he was taking may have caused the condition, which led to him being diagnosed with pancreatitis.

He had been taking clozapine, an antipsychotic medication for treating schizophrenia, for six years.

During that time he had become obese and was sleeping up to 18 hours a day.

He lived in a flat assisted by carers following a stay at the Harplands Hospital, and also took drugs for blood pressure and cholesterol.

In March last year he started complaining of pains in his stomach. He died of pancreatitis just seven days later.

Oxygen to the organs had been cut off because of the high levels of fat in the blood and parts of the pancreas died.

Speaking at the inquest his mother, Janet Cotton, said: "He had only become overweight since he started the medications, he tried to exercise but he slept so much he didn't have time to do anything else."

On March 18, the day after he was admitted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Mr Bashman was moved to a high dependency unit.

On March 23, a surgeon operated, removing the dead part of the pancreas but it was too late.

Mr Bashman died the following morning.

North Staffordshire Coroner Ian Smith recorded a verdict of death by natural causes. He said: "There is a possibility the fat in his blood came about because of his drug treatment but he needed that treatment for his mental health illness."

"Drugs are not perfect, they all have side effects."
