Figures reveal reduction in flu cases

THE flu epidemic in North Staffordshire is starting to abate, according to figures.

People attending GP surgeries with flu-like illnesses has reduced by almost a third from last week and are now in line with the seasonal average.

The numbers are also 10 per cent lower than the national rate.

Rates fell in all age groups except five to 14-year-olds which saw a slight increase following schools returning from the Christmas break.

This week in the West Midlands, including North Staffordshire, there was an average of 51.7 consultations with GPs per 100,000 people compared to 71.8 last week.

The number of patients on hospital critical care units including the University Hospital of North Staffordshire has also fallen from 59 to 34.
