Monkey Tree opening hours won't be extended

A POPULAR drinking venue in West Bridgford has been refused permission to extend its opening times, after opposition from people living nearby.

The Monkey Tree, in Bridgford Road, applied to Rushcliffe Borough Council for permission to open longer.

Councillors discussed the application on Thursday and rejected the request.

The bar currently opens from 10am in the morning until midnight Tuesday-Saturday.

The proposal would have allowed it to open until 12.30am, with a further half an hour for people to leave, meaning doors would not have been locked until 1am.

It could also have opened at 8am, seven days a week, till 1am on Christmas Eve and for 24 hours on New Year's Eve.

The council received 14 letters of objection.

There were fears of excessive noise and of cigarette ends and other litter being strewn about pavements.

One resident unhappy about the proposal was Angela Finn, of Park Avenue, the next street to the bar.

Ms Finn, who has two children, aged seven and five, said: "I have made complaints in the past about the night-time revellers.

"I understand West Bridgford is becoming a more cosmopolitan place to live and people may want to have a night out rather than head into the city. But when you live where I do, you see a different side of things."

She said she had seen revellers spilling out of the bar and then urinating in her street.

"And the litter – although the bar does clean most of it up – is still visible on a Saturday or Sunday morning," she said.

Another objector was 75-year-old cancer sufferer Nancy Parker, also of Park Avenue. She said: "My philosophy is live and let live, but it has been difficult to live alongside the Monkey Tree at times.

"The council's decision is fantastic news.

"I was opposed to the new times and I have made complaints about the venue before. Pub-goers need to have a bit more respect for residents."

Matt Shelton, public relations manager for the bar, said: "We were only talking about half an hour longer at night with a further half an hour dispersal time.

"We've only applied for an extension because customers have asked for it, and we think it would be welcomed by them.

"We always strive to work with our local residents and to be good neighbours. We didn't feel the new times would cause much concern.

"Other bars in the area have a 1am licence, so this move was to pull the Monkey Tree into line with our competitors."
