Police name victim of Boxing Day shooting

A 24-YEAR-OLD had to have a bullet removed from his brain after being shot in the neck in St Ann's on Boxing Day.

Police have named the victim as Damien Meredith.

He is still in a critical condition in hospital and police say his life "hangs in the balance".

Almost four weeks after the shooting, they are renewing their appeal for witnesses.

Five men, aged 18-25, have been arrested and interviewed in connection with the incident.

All have been released on bail and none have been charged.

It is believed Mr Meredith had attended a party at a home in Westville Gardens when a dispute broke out.

Police believe that as he was leaving, shots were fired. A bullet struck him in the neck and travelled into his brain. Another bullet hit him in the leg, immobilising him.

He was bundled, bleeding, into a car and driven to Woodborough Road, where he was transferred to an ambulance, which took him to the Queen's Medical Centre.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Heydon, leading the investigation, said: "The long-term future for Mr Meredith is unclear. He is unlikely to be fully recovered for some considerable time and it is difficult to know how he will respond to treatment.

"It is clear, however, that he nearly died and the hospital staff have given him some hope with their skill and dedication.

"It is imperative that we identify the person who caused such a devastating injury and we have had an excellent response to our earlier appeals for information."

Police have spoken to about 40 people who were in the area at the time. They have also searched three homes and seized six vehicles for forensic examination.

Detective Chief Inspector Heydon said: "If you were in the vicinity of Westville Gardens at the time, please help us to identify who fired those shots.

"There are people who have not yet come forward and I urge them to do so. If anyone has concerns about coming forward, we can certainly take steps to provide protection and support for them.

"I want to reiterate that whatever happened that led to this incident, a young man is seriously ill in hospital and his family have been left devastated by what has happened."

Anyone who can provide information is urged to call the incident room at St Ann's police station on 0115 844 5020. Alternatively, they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
