The government on Monday urged all South Africans who are in Egypt to remain indoors until the volatile situation in that country returns to normal.

In a statement, the department of international relations and co-operation said they should also contact the South African Embassy for updates on the situation.

It said the South African Mission in Egypt had earlier managed to meet South African citizens stranded at Cairo Airport, and a flight had been arranged for them out of the country.

“Following our intervention, all South African citizens who were at the airport are safely boarding to South Africa with the assistance of the mission.”

Government had noted with concern the events unfolding in Egypt.

“Government calls on all South Africans who are currently in Egypt to remain indoors and in their present location until the current situation returns to normal and to remain in contact with the South African Embassy for updates on the current situation.”

It said family members in South Africa could contact the department's consular section on 012-351-1000 for any help they might need.

“It is also recommended that travellers contact their airlines as well as their travel agents to verify matters of planned travel to Egypt,” the department said. - Sapa
