MILITARY veterans with mental health problems will be offered help by the Nottingham-based Combat Stress Support Helpline.
The new 24-hour freephone number, 0800 138 1619, is run by charities Combat Stress and Rethink Mental Illness.
It will help veterans and their families get expert advice from people trained in dealing with former service men and women who are experiencing mental health problems as a result of their active service.
The Government is giving 200,000 for a one-year trial of the helpline.
Prime Minister David Cameron has spoken of the valuable role the new service can play.
"Very few servicemen and women with mental health problems go looking for treatment," he said.
"They don't want to make a fuss, and so suffer in silence rather than seek help.
"This requires us to be more proactive, reaching out to them.
"We need a national change in attitude towards mental health and combat stress, recognising that the mental scars can be every bit as damaging as the physical ones."
