Town service for former mayor

A MEMORIAL event is taking place tomorrow in Newark to commemorate a former mayor of the town.

Hercules Clay was a former cloth merchant and a churchwarden in the town, becoming mayor in 1644.

When he died in 1645, he left 100 to pay for an annual sermon which teaches about the power of good work and 100 to pay for bread for the town's needy.

Mr Clay left the money to the church in his will after escaping death during the Civil War.

The annual commemoration service will begin at 11am, when a civic procession will walk from the Ballroom at Newark Town Hall to a service at the Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene, which is in Church Walk.

Following the service given by Rector of Newark Reverend Vivian Enever, the current Mayor Tony Roberts will give out loaves to the choristers in keeping with Mr Clay's wishes.

Following this, there will be speeches in the ballroom at the Town Hall.
